CORSSA 2.0 Workshop

-- The Second International CORSSA (the Community Online Resource

for Statistical Seismicity Analysis) Workshop

Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Tachikawa, Tokyo
2013-01-22 to 2013-01-25

Introduction

Statistical seismology is the application of rigorous statistical methods to earthquake science with the goal of improving our knowledge of how the earth works. Within statistical seismology there is a strong emphasis on the analysis of seismicity data in order to improve our scientific understanding of earthquakes and to improve the evaluation and testing of earthquake forecasts, earthquake early warning, and seismic hazards assessments. Given the societal importance of these applications, statistical seismology must be done well. Unfortunately, a lack of educational resources and available software tools make it difficult for students and new practitioners to learn about this discipline. The goal of the Community Online Resource for Statistical Seismicity Analysis (CORSSA) is to promote excellence in statistical seismology by providing the knowledge and resources necessary to understand and implement the best practices.

The first CORSSA workshop was held in May17-21, Zurich, organized by Stefan Wiemer and Andy Michael.  Our time in Zurich was extremely productive. We created a draft table of contents for CORSSA, designed the web site and the layout of the articles, decided on a peer review process, started the process to make the articles citable by having DOIs for them, selected an executive committee to oversee the resource, and began writing the articles.  After the workshop, 14 articles have been finished, about 40% of initial goal. We are happy to say that we have gotten a lot of good feedback on CORSSA from readers and it is now time to take the next step.

This time, the CORSSA 2.0 workshop will be held at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics (ISM), Tokyo Japan during Jan 22-25, 2013.  Similar to the first workshop, we will have a few science talks to stimulate conversation, but will spend most of the time working to improve CORSSA.  We have obtained partial sponsorship from ISM, the Swiss Seismological Service, and the Southern California Earthquake Center, to support volunteers from worldwide to contribute to the CORSSA project.
